  Bentonite Clay

Bentonite is one of the two naturally occurring minerals of montmorillonite group with decolorizing and absorbing properties, the other minerals of this group being fuller’s earth. On exposure, almost all Bentonite assume a slightly darker shade due to absorption of moisture. Two types of Bentonite viz., swelling and non-swelling types are commonly known in trade. Sodium Bentonite is of swelling type while calcium Bentonite is non-swelling. Bentonite is believed to have been formed by the alteration of volcanic ash deposits, mostly of Upper Cretaceous Age. The commercial importance of Bentonite depends more on its physico-chemical properties such as Base Exchange capacity, thixotropy, settling time, swelling power, pH value, etc. then on chemical composition. Treated Bentonite has been used in palletizing of iron ore fines, in ceramic nuclear fuels and ceramic moderators.

Sodium and calcium Bentonite are distinctly characterized by high ration of their dominant exchangeable base. Intermediate type Bentonite may have either sodium or calcium base dominant but in low or nearly equal ratios-mixed Bentonite may exhibit low, high or equal ration of sodium and calcium iron but contain a higher percentage of non-clay material and/or other clay minerals. Plasticity and bonding strength of all bentonite and dilatency (swelling capacity) viscosity (resistance to flow), thixotropy (getting strength) of sodium bentonite are all due to colloidal nature of bentonite. Sodium bentonite (high swelling-high gel) are strongly hydroscopic exhibiting a great affinity for water.

Non-swelling bentonite (sub-bentonite meta-bentonite) are calcium bentonite. Calcium bentonite is more common than sodium bentonite because calcium is higher in the replacement series.

SPECIFICATION OF BENTONE 500

BENTONE 500 additive is an easy to disperse orgtanoclay rheological additive that is useful in offset and letterpress printing inks which are produced using only moderate levels of shear. This rheological additive requires neither the shear nor the chemical activation needed when using conventional organoclays. It is an efficient replacement for fumed silica and other gelling agents. And BENTONE 500 additive is most effective in printing inks containing aliphatic, aromatic or naphthenic oils and solvents it is not normally suitable for systems containing high polarity, oxygenated solvent such as esters, ketones and alcohols.

BENTONE SD-2 additive gives stable viscocity and controls sag and pigment settling.
 
       APPLICATIONS:-
 

1. In systems based on high to medium polarity solvents, such as ketones, esters,  tlycol ethers and alcohols including polar systems with some aromatic solvent.

SPECIFICATION OF BENTONE SD-3

BENTONE SD-3 Is an organic derivative of a smectite mineral.  This easy to use and highly efficient rheological additive is designed for coating systems with a wide range of solvent polarities.  Added directly to the mill base, it disperses readily and completely.  It requires no pregelling and no chemical activator.  BENTONE SD-3 additive provides stable viscosity, controls sag and suspends pigments.

       APPLICATIONS:-
  1. In aromatic solvent systems, Its full efficiency and ease of use are most readily obtained in 100 percent aromatic and blends of aliphatic and aromatic solvents of low to intermediate polarity.
 
  2. In products such as industrial enamels, maintenance coatings, auto-mative finishes, re finish systems, anti corrosive paints, road marking systems, marine paints and primers.

  1) Visual Inspection :- Shall be dry in the form of powder free from any lumps, grits etc.
  2) Chemical Composition :- Shall conform to the following requirements:
     Cao (Replaceable Ca ++) shall not be more then 1.0%
     Na2o/Cao ration shall be within 1 to 1.7 in the Base Exchange
     Alkali content as sodium and potassium oxide shall be between 0.7 to 1.19
  3) Moisture content :- Shall not be more than 10% but not less than 8%
  4) pH Value :- Shall not be less than 8.5
  5) Acceptance Specifications :- Shall conform to the following requirements:
     Gelling Time – Should be less than 60 seconds
     Swelling Capacity – Shall be between 24 and 32 as specification mentioned in paragraph under ‘SWELLING CAPACITY’
     Swelling index – 16 -20
     Methylene blue requirement shall be between 410 and 440 mgm. of methylene blue per Gm of Bentonite

:- Note more then 0.25 gm per 100gm. Take 100gm sample on B.S.S. No. 200 mesh and sieve the material for 6 hours on Ro-tap sieve shaker.  The material passing through 200 mesh should not be more then 250 mg.

7. Sportive Capacity

:- Minimum 18% Granules impregnated with 18% Kerosene should be free flowing and should not clump together after 30 Minutes and color of impregnated granules is not much darker then the original.
